Elcho Avenue Has Already Outgrown Its Own Description

October 1, 2026

Ask any site that describes Crested Butte South's commercial district and you'll get the same seven words back, more or less verbatim: a restaurant, a general store, a coffee shop, a liquor store, a wine bar, a landscaping and gardening store, a childcare facility. It reads like an inventory taken once and copied ever since. It isn't wrong exactly. It's just no longer complete, and the building that makes it incomplete opened two years ago on a block most of those descriptions never got around to updating.

Elcho Avenue runs two blocks in the heart of CB South, with a second cluster of businesses a block over on Gillaspey Avenue. Together they form the closest thing the neighborhood has to a Main Street, separate from Red Mountain Park's twelve acres of rinks and pump track a short walk away. The strip has had the same handful of anchors for years. What's changed is what got built between them, and what's platted to go up next.

The Anchors That Have Been There All Along

The Wooden Spoon Restaurant & Country Store sits at 228 Elcho Avenue and does double duty in a way that's easy to undersell in a one-line description. It's a full-service restaurant with a bar, and it's also a country store stocked with groceries and pantry basics, which makes it the closest thing CB South has to a one-stop errand run. It keeps early-to-late hours, open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., which covers both the breakfast crowd and the after-work dinner crowd without a gap in between.

A few doors down at 282 Elcho, Tully's runs a narrower schedule on purpose. It's open Tuesday through Saturday, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., with the kitchen closing promptly at close. No lunch service, no Sunday or Monday hours. It's built as an evening spot, family-oriented, serving all-American food with ingredients sourced locally when the menu allows it.

Those two have anchored the block for years. Neither one is the story right now.

The Building That Isn't on Anyone's Boilerplate

At 235 Elcho Avenue, Zuni West Brewing Company opened its taproom in June 2024, inside a 4,000-square-foot building that didn't exist on this stretch a few years earlier. It's the Crested Butte outpost of Zuni Street Brewing, a Denver brewery founded in 2017, with brewing equipment on site. According to Crested Butte News, owner and head brewer Willy Truettner installed a 10-barrel brewhouse with six 10-barrel fermenters, four 20-barrel fermenters, a three-barrel fermenter, and two 20-barrel foeders for sour beer, for a combined 143 barrels of fermentation capacity split between the two operations. That's a meaningfully larger buildout than a simple taproom needs, which gives the CB South operation substantial on-site brewing capacity.

The opening wasn't frictionless. In the same report, Truettner said, "We are hoping to open the taproom in June, with a grand opening party scheduled for June 15," while the crew was still waiting on a natural gas hookup and a liquor license that came through in April of that year after a public hearing with Gunnison County. It's a small detail, but it says something about how new construction actually happens on this block: permits, utilities, and licensing all have to line up before the doors open, and even a straightforward brewery build ran that gauntlet in real time.

Zuni West now runs a rotating food truck schedule alongside its own grab-and-go options, welcomes outside food, and keeps a full bar of local wine and spirits alongside the beer it brews in house.

One Block Over

Camp 4 Coffee has a location on Gillaspey Avenue, its third in the valley alongside spots in downtown Crested Butte and Mt. Crested Butte's Mountaineer Square. All three roast their beans in small batches right in Crested Butte, which means CB South isn't getting a satellite outpost of someone else's roasting operation. It's part of the same production loop as the other two locations.

Also on Gillaspey, Red Mountain Liquors keeps a storefront built to echo the area's historic architecture rather than a generic strip-mall front, stocking beer, wine, spirits, and mixers for a community that would otherwise have to drive into town for the same errand.

Put together, the actual commercial footprint of CB South already spans two streets, not the single flat block the boilerplate implies. And the childcare operation and the garden and landscaping supplier from that same tired description are still part of the mix, filling a role the food and drink businesses don't touch.

What's Platted Next Door

None of this happened by accident. Years back, the CB South Property Owners Association spent roughly two years working through commercial area building standards for what's called the C-zone, aiming for a walkable village center with plazas, a transit hub for bikes and buses, and a Main Street feel rather than the mismatched zoning that had accumulated up to that point. Zuni West is the clearest example so far of new construction actually built under that vision rather than around it.

The POA still runs a standing Citizen Subcommittee dedicated specifically to the Commercial Area, alongside separate subcommittees for Short Term Rentals and Parks. That's not a passive listing of what exists. It's an active body watching what gets built next on this exact stretch of ground, and there are already platted parcels in the CB South Village Center sitting inside Block 6, ready for whatever comes after Zuni West.

The next addition to Elcho Avenue is less a question of if than when, and the seven-word description everyone keeps reprinting will be out of date again the moment it opens.

If you're the type who wants to know what's actually on this block before the next building goes up, not after, that's the kind of local detail The O'Brien Group tracks as a matter of course. Stop by and compare notes on what's changed since the last time you walked it.
